Burst & Leaking Pipes for Fairfield Homes

Burst and leaking pipes aren't one problem, they're several that look similar from the outside. Here's roughly what we're assessing when we arrive.

A sudden burst. Usually a split in an old galvanised line, often under real pressure and needing the water isolated immediately.

A slow leak. Less dramatic but still causing damage over time, sometimes only obvious once a wall or ceiling shows staining.

A fitting failure. Joints, valves and connections wear out and let go, particularly on original pipework decades past its design life.

Original galvanised water pipes are still doing the job in plenty of pre-1980 Fairfield homes, including much of the older stock around Vine Street. Steel corrodes from the inside long before it shows on the outside, and a pipe can hold pressure right up until it doesn't.

When it finally gives way, it's rarely gentle. After-hours bursts are one of the most common emergency calls we take across the suburb, alongside the same ageing clay drainage lines that tend to fail around the same age.

We carry stock for common fitting sizes on older systems specifically because of how often we're replacing them out this way.

A single fitting swap is often done in one call-out. A full section of corroded pipe can take longer if matching parts need sourcing first.

Galvanised steel pipe has a zinc coating that protects the steel underneath, but that coating wears thin with age and mineral-heavy water eventually strips it further.

Once the steel itself is exposed, corrosion builds up on the inside of the pipe rather than the outside, which is why there's rarely any warning visible from the surface.

By the time a pipe actually splits, the surrounding sections have usually corroded just as much. That's why any repair includes a check of nearby fittings too, beyond just the section that failed.
